Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS is now available, the first maintenance update for 'Noble Numbat'

Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS is here, the first maintenance update for Noble Numbat. In other words, if you were thinking about installing Ubuntu, here is the recommended version for practically all use cases. And when we say Ubuntu, we mean Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu.

Codenamed ‘Noble Numbat’, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS was released last April, becoming the new LTS version of the Linux distribution with up to 12 years of support: five of general support and another seven through subscription (free with limits). That is, this version of the system will receive updates until 2036.

Otherwise, the new features of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS remain unchanged in this update: highlights include Linux 6.8, systemd 255, Mesa 24.0, a revamped system installer, and GNOME 46 as the default desktop environment.

The only new features as such are the OEM mode in the system installer and the GNOME welcome wizard on first login, both of which were not available in the preview.

¿Are you already using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and keeping your system up to date?

Then this release is not of interest to you, because you are up to date. Unlike future updates to this version (Ubuntu 24.04.2, Ubuntu 24.04.3…), the first one does not update the base components, it only includes fixes and security patches, renews the installation media and little else.

Now, if you are still using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, the upgrade path to this new version is open. This was, in fact, the reason for the delay: serious bugs in the upgrade process that had to be fixed, before potentially exposing millions of users willing to abandon Jammy Jellyfish in favor of the new feature that Noble Numbat brings with it. But don't be in a hurry, as the invitation to upgrade will not be given immediately, but over the next few hours or even days.
